Council must be financially responsible and has decided to look at options for the Oval’s long term future to ensure that the interests of ratepayers are considered and protected.

To provide for the ongoing long-term viability of the Oval, Council is exploring options for the use of the Park.  Some options raised in the past have included:

  • No change to the facilities and Council to fund future renewal works.
  • Converting the Oval to parkland and/or a sports field with smaller facilities attached eliminating much of the need for future capital expenditure
  • Expanded use of existing facilities to be licensed for a profit to additional regular users/licensees (e.g. moonlight cinema, other sporting groups etc)
  • A commercial development  at the southern end of the Park that could be leased for a profit (e.g. retail shops, medical centre, gymnasium, offices, underground car parking) to subsidise future capital expenditure and ultimately make the site cost neutral

Some of the above proposals have been looked at in the past, and there were various levels of community consultation undertaken at the time.

Before making a decision, Council has resolved to undertake comprehensive community consultation to identify a range of options and understand the community’s preferences about the future of the Park.
